Yes, furry pets like dogs and cats can be very helpful for support while dealing with type 1 diabetes. Here are some ways they can assist:

- Companionship: Pets provide emotional support and companionship, which can reduce feelings of loneliness.
- Routine: Caring for a pet can help establish a routine, which is beneficial for managing diabetes.
- Service Dogs: Specifically trained service dogs can detect changes in blood sugar levels and alert their owners, retrieve emergency kits, or notify others in case of an emergency.

However, it's important to remember that while pets can offer support, they do not replace proper diabetes care and monitoring.

I have two pets, a cat and a dog. They are both emotional support animals. My dog helps me a lot because we walk in the summer up to seven blocks twice a day. It has really improved my numbers dramatically. My fur babies can tell when I’m low and let me know right away.

Yes! Most definitely! If it had not been for all my sweet fur babies, I would have been so lonely in this walk with type 1 diabetes! Actually, for me , focusing on caring for my sweet little tiny Yorkie fur baby helped me survive when I was at my sickest and my lowest point!

Yes, a pet can be helpful. My cat nudges me when she thinks I am low. She is not trained to do so, but she always seems to know. She is also an emotional outlet for me at times. She is not a Service Animal and I really don't feel she needs to be one. She's just a four-legged friend.

Hi. Yes, I actually have a diabetic service dog. Back when there were no CGMs pumps etc and you had to know when your glucose was high or low, I bought Clark. He still puts his paw on my leg if high or low and if I don’t do something, he barks at me. He’s my best friend, still does it even though I have a dexcom and is right by my side. Since I do have the dexcom, I don’t take him everywhere, now but he’s at the door when I come home. My best friend has paws. He’s a black lab and I love him dearly. They are a little work but …
