What’s Your Trick For Enjoying Holiday Treats And Staying On Track? 🎃
The main thing is count the carbs. What I do is substitute, I can eat 1/2 piece of pumpkin pie and skip bread, eat a cookie, usually 18 carbs so skip fruit. I just find it easier this way so I don’t have to bolus extra insulin.
You have to decide if the sweet is worth the substitute! Also remember, you will be getting more sugar and spike earlier so go accordingly
For me here I have 2 choices: 1. Skip the treats. 2. Take appropriate additional fast acting insulin. IMPORTANT - If you're not sure what the appropriate amount is then revert to choice #1 without pausing! As a guide for the proper amount, I take 1 unit of Novalog per 10gm. carbohydrates. Once this difficult problem of how to cover unexpected carb eating is solved you will have taken an enormous step towards total control and independence.
Also, "Snack Size" Halloween candies are usually 12 - 15 carbs per piece. I like to carry them with me when I go out in case of a low blood sugar. I have some in my work bag, plus a few pieces in my purse. Perfect hypo treats!
For a Halloween snack I eat; sliced fruit, celery with peanut butter. Not ants on a log because raisins (ants) are fruit. If my blood sugar is low I eat a snack size Recess PB Cup. Recess have always been my favorite candy!😋
This will be my FIRST Thanksgiving & Christmas since my diagnosis! I dread it but want to be with my large family. I see some good suggestions. My husband is the baker in our family. He makes awesome pumpkin pies; last week he treated me with a crustless pie using monkfruit instead of sugar. It was DELISH!
