Anyone Else Have An Issue With Bagels And Proper Bolus Causing Lows?

A myT1Dteam Member asked a question 💭

Anytime I have a bagel, I have to adjust for 15g of carbs, and not the 30-60! grams that the packaging or nutritional website states are in the bagel.

It doesn't seem to be fiber related either. Anything else I have in the morning, I need to adjust properly or risk going too high or too low, even if its a bread product.

Bagels, like other high-carbohydrate foods, can sometimes cause blood sugar levels to spike and then drop, especially if the insulin dose (bolus) isn't perfectly matched to the carbohydrate content. Here are some tips to manage this:

- Monitor Carbs: Carefully count the carbohydrates in the bagel and adjust your insulin dose accordingly.
- Timing: Consider the timing of your insulin. Sometimes splitting the dose can help manage the blood sugar spike and subsequent drop.
- Check Blood Sugar: Regularly monitor your blood sugar levels to catch any lows early.
- Carry Glucose: Always have a source of glucose on hand, such as glucose tablets, gel packets, or juice, to treat any unexpected lows.

If you continue to experience issues, it might be helpful to discuss with your healthcare provider for personalized advice.
