How Did You First Discover You Had Type 1 Diabetes, And What Was Your Initial Reaction?
I was 23 and scared to death, especially since I had history of passing out around needles. Took time to adjust, stop trying to beat it, accepting it, and I'm 72 and can ref soccer running 30-40 miles in a tournament weekend
My mother took me to the doctor because I was drinking constantly and peeing a lot. She said I was like a "Pee and Wet" doll. My uncle (Mom's brother) had been diagnosed in his early 20s, so she walked into the doctor's office with me and said, "I think she's a diabetic," and he said, "I think you're right!" He told my mom to take me to Children's Hospital where I was diagnosed. I only remember bits and pieces of being in the hospital because I was only 2-1/2 years old.
My brother was type 1 so I knew the signs. I was a newlywed (24) and got over a horrible sickness when I began having weight loss and extreme thirst.
dont know as i was only 2
Went to the ER after throwing up for 3 days. Turned out I was in the middle of an almost fatal DKA with pancreatitis and sepsis added in for funsies.
