Hi Everyone,
I just got diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in November 2023. This disease is still “new” to me and I’m learning everyday. I just got an insulin pump about a month ago. It is not keeping me in range. So, when I am out of range for two hours after eating, I add more insulin and then it goes up even more! What am I doing wrong?
I’ve only been diabetic since Jan 23 so not a lot longer than you but I have been on a pump for the last year so hopefully can help. Without more info I would say your ratios may be off. When I switched to the pump from mdi I had to change mine to get more insulin per meal. So if I were you I would change your ratios by a couple carbs. So if you are using the 15 to 1 ratio I would drop it to 12 or 13 to 1 and give it a few days and see if that helps. You may also need different ratios for different times of day or certain days a month (if you menstruate). Another thing that could be off is your correction factor. Try finding that again and see if it has changed. Maybe it’s set too high and needs to be lowered to make you pump more effective.
You’re welcome Kelly8! Hopefully making some small changes will get you back in range and feeling better. Then you can eat more without fear. Just remember to give yourself some grace. Nothing is perfect and everyone has a bad day here and there.
Thank you Michele3!!
I appreciate the help. This disease is very scary to me. I’ve lost so much weight because I’m scared to eat in fear of going too high and getting damage and complications.
