Weight Control With High Blood Sugar

A myT1Dteam Member asked a question 💭

In my 20's I controlled my weight by having high blood sugar. It also caused early kidney failure thus the kidney/pancreas transplant. It was all about me controlling something/anything in my life. Does anyone else do this, or thought about this? I wish I had the education and the new gadgets that are out now.

Get a Tandem insulin pump with the Dexcom CGM. Once I started that my A1c went from 8 to 5.5. I have been able to easily maintain that for almost 3 years.

Managing weight while controlling high blood sugar levels in type 1 diabetes involves a balanced approach that includes diet, exercise, and proper insulin management. Here are some key points to consider:

1. **Healthy Eating Habits**: Focus on a balanced diet rich in fiber, such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, and low in refined sugars and fats. This helps in managing both weight and blood sugar levels.

2. **Regular Physical Activity**: Exercise is crucial not only for weight management but also for improving insulin sensitivity. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, as recommended for adults.

3. **Monitor Blood Sugar Levels**: Keeping a close eye on your blood sugar levels can help you adjust your diet and insulin doses more effectively, which is important for both diabetes management and weight control.

4. **Consult Healthcare Providers**: Regular check-ups with your healthcare provider are essential. They can help adjust your insulin therapy and provide guidance on diet and exercise tailored to your needs.

5. **Avoid Weight Cycling**: Be cautious of diet trends that lead to rapid weight loss and gain, known as weight cycling, which can negatively impact your heart health and blood sugar levels.

By integrating these strategies, you can better manage your weight while keeping your blood sugar levels in check.
