Brittle diabetes, also known as unstable or labile diabetes, is a form of diabetes characterized by severe and frequent swings in blood sugar levels. These fluctuations can be so extreme that they may require hospitalization.

Is It Type 1?
- Brittle diabetes is often associated with type 1 diabetes, but it can also occur in people with type 2 diabetes.

Diagnosis
- Diagnosis involves monitoring blood glucose levels to identify severe and frequent swings.
- Consultation with a healthcare provider or an endocrinologist is recommended for proper diagnosis.

Treatment
- Medical Devices:
- Insulin Pump: Delivers small doses of insulin throughout the day to maintain stable blood sugar levels.
- Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM): Constantly checks blood glucose levels and alerts when they are too high or too low. It helps identify patterns in blood sugar swings.
- Addressing Underlying Conditions:
- If brittle diabetes is caused by another health condition, treating that condition is crucial. This could involve dietary changes, medications, or mental health support.

I am very sensitive to both insulin and food. A small amount has a big effect on me. Doctors have called me a "brittle diabetic" because this sensitivity makes it difficult to control my blood sugar.
Brittle diabetes is not a Type of diabetes. It simply means the sugar levels of the person with diabetes are difficult to control.
