How Can I Stay In My Goal Range When Experiencing Stress And Pain?

A myT1Dteam Member asked a question 💭

My physiology has always had an effect on my sugar levels. When I used to have my cycle- my numbers would be higher. Same with stress or anxiety
But now, those numbers are beginning to skyrocket when I’m experiencing those emotions. And pain has become a newcomer to the group
A trip to the MVA to renew my license kind of turned into a situation because I didn’t have an appointment. Didn’t know I needed one. Nothing in the paperwork. I hadn’t been there for 8 years- so I was not aware!

I took my son to a therapist when he was diagnosed at 14 and really struggling with it. It helped him a lot. He's 18 now and really struggling with high blood sugars and can't seen to get his a1c down. He's going through another emotional experience again. We may have to start therapy back up again

Wow Nancy, that's a good question. Being that I am a newly diagnosed diabetic, I'm not sure myself. I just freaked out over forgetting my password while changing my sensor (funny, not funny) I did see one example: take in 2 quick breaths (thru your nose) then out one LONG breath (thru your mouth). I've tried this a few times & I think it works, when I remember to do that. I guess practice is important. God bless you, as you travel this new path.

I find that taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly helps me relieve stress. Yoga is another good way.

General Tips
- Avoid Substance Abuse: Stay away from alcohol, caffeine, and cigarettes as coping mechanisms.

Preparing for Surgery
- Plan Ahead: Discuss with your healthcare provider how to manage your blood sugar before, during, and after surgery.
