Yes, type 1 diabetes can affect a person's ability to do their job. Here are some key points from the knowledge base:

- Reasonable Accommodations: The Americans with Disabilities Act ensures a fair working environment for people with diabetes. Accommodations might include scheduled breaks to check blood sugar levels or having a quick snack to prevent hypoglycemia.
- Documentation: Employers may ask for documentation, like a doctor’s note, to prove the need for specific considerations.
- Undue Hardship: If accommodations cause undue hardship (too expensive or not feasible), employers may offer other solutions.
- Severe Complications: Diabetes complications like retinopathy, amputations, and kidney disease can make it impossible to maintain a job. In such cases, speaking with a lawyer might be necessary.

I had a team of about 45 people working for me, but fortunately one of them saved me from an embarrassing moment when I had a severe low blood sugar episode. I yelled at her and threw a bottle of water at her, but she coaxed me to drink a coke.

I advise you to make sure at least one coworker knows about your condition and how to help you.
