What’s One Thing You Wish People Better Understood About Living With Type 1 Diabetes?
That having a cgm a🤦♀️nd an insulin pump is not a "cure" and doesn't make everything "alright". 🤦♀️
I just wish they could understand that everything affects your sugar, not just food. I mean hormones, stress, sleep or lack of sleep, weather, the neighbors dogs breakfast, Aunt Flow. Literally anything for nothing for any reason.
That having type 1 consumes your mental capacity. When you can eat, when you can't eat, what you eat, do you have to eat a snack even when not hungry. Bringing all the stuff along with you in case you need it. Oh my goodness the cost. I was having lower abdominal pain and it was concerning for appendix. My first thought was darn my cgm that I just put on will have to be removed to go into CT or mri. Luckily I think it was just a virus and I am carrying on. Then my second thought was (I am a nurse) my hospital treats everyone like a type 2 and does not really address type 1 correctly. So yea the constant thoughts related to this diagnosis.
It is a constant thing that affects your thinking, meal preparation, and daily activities of living.
It is hard socially because eating on a schedule is necessary and if you are not diabetic you don’t get how important it is. Trying to snack to eat later to accommodate friends is a real stressful struggle. Not a Diva, but sometimes perceived as one. That mental strain is lonely.
