Suggestions For Avoiding Nighttime Highs And Lows.I'm Up At Night Checking My Grandsons Pump, giving Glucose, putting In Corrections, boluses.
It can be difficult, especially with someone so young, to get the blood sugar readings just right. The best thing that I can suggest is to keep a log of what he is eating in the afternoon and at dinner. Some foods, like whole grains, are slower to digest and may cause a rise in blood sugar later on. By the same token, fast acting Carbohydrates will break down quickly and then cause a low if there is still active insulin on board.
By tracking his food intake, you will start to figure out why his blood sugars are fluctuating so much and how to adjust his insulin accordingly. His endocrine/NP/Diabetes Educator can help with these adjustments.
One other note, be sure to measure his food while charting so that you can tell his medical team how much mashed potatoes or corn or pasta, etc. he is eating. This will help a great deal!
Thank you!
And make sure he has protein in his system before bed to help buffer some blood sugar drops. Hang in there!
Thank you so much!
